Thinking about renovating or building your new home? I’m sure you have dozens of questions running through your mind and future proofing your home should be one of them.  No one wants a home where the products with an attractive price tag deteriorate in a few years...and the market now days are full of them!  We want products that last the distance and are going to save you money (and sanity) in the long run.

Today’s blog post is about ‘green plumbing’ and when I talk about ‘green plumbing’ your first thought maybe saving the environment. However it is so much more than that, green plumbing also means saving energy use in your home, easing off those utility bill amounts and of course the cost to fix or replace that once ‘so attractive’ item.

If you have a project you are managing, or want to talk about options with your building contractor, I have listed below just some, useful options to consider when future proofing your homes plumbing and heating.

Solar Water Heaters - Premier Solar

Rheem Premier Solar is an indirect solar water heater.

  • Designed for a wide range of environments and suitable for most water qualities.
  • Combines revolutionary drain back heat exchange technology in a durable vitreous enamel lined mains pressure cylinder.
  • Fully integrated system of solar hot water cylinder, electronic controls and sensing of the collectors ensures the available energy is used in the most effective way.
  • Combined with Rheem high efficiency collectors, this system can cut water heating energy consumption by up to 70%. This means lower costs and reduced carbon footprint.
  • Slim line collectors are roof mounted, while the larger capacity storage cylinder is located at ground level indoors or outdoors.

Buteline pipes and fittings

Proudly NZ owned and operated, Buteline pride them selves on offering ‘green plumbing’ with a whole webpage dedicated especially to it.  This brand already has world-wide recognition and it is the sustainability – a long product lifetime of over 50 years.

It is the creation of polymer fittings and pipe that is far less energy intensive and less damaging to the environment than the creation of metallic fittings and pipe.

Thermoplastics are able to be recycled due to their chemical structure, allowing many cycles of heating, forming, and repeated re-heating and re-forming.

Buteline pipe and fittings do not corrode or leach harmful substances, do not get scale build-up, and do not affect water taste or quality.

They have also developed several polymer alternatives to traditional brass fittings that is not only environmentally-better but also give you potential cost saving of up to 45%!

GreenGlo hot water Cylinder

This very ‘green’ looking hot water cylinder is designed to suit NZ conditions. Integrating different heat sources (including solar), the GreenGlo cylinder delivers energy consistently for all heating requirements, safely and economically by generating maximum performance in all climatic conditions.  The ultra high efficiency system works on heat transfer.  A glass surface is designed to change the light and heat wave length, trapping the energy inside the tube, which is then transferred through to the manifold heat exchanger.

With the ability to reduce ‘water heating’ costs up to 75%, the GreenGlo cylinder is also very versatile, making it ideal to replace any old defunct system.

Allflow Watermate – the greywater recycling unit

Grey water recycling is proving to be a popular option nowadays, with economical units available like the Allflow Watermate. You can recycle the waste water from the washing machine (up to 200 litres per day) and showers (at least 10 litres per minute) and use it to irrigate the property. Potentially saving over 40,000 litres per person a year for a second use around the property.

The second tier of grey water recycling is treating the grey water to a degree where it can be used for flushing toilets, where the savings are easily noticed.

  • The economical Rheem Heat Pump uses ambient heat from the atmosphere as its primary energy source.
  • Advanced single-pass top-down heating technology delivers hot water to the top of the tank, heating the tank from the 'top-down' and providing usable hot water faster.
  • Fast recovery rate minimises Heat Pump operation, extending product life.
